Red Sky Thinking with BAL External Tiling Solutions – find out more at the Surface Design Show 2016 stand 616

View the whole press release

Connecting the inside with the outdoors is the latest trend in design, with an increased need for balconies, roof terraces and ground floor terraces and patios to be incorporated in blueprints for commercial and domestic projects.

To have these areas available all year round requires coverings that are durable, hard-wearing and all weather – and tiles are the perfect answer, provided that assemblies are properly constructed.

BAL – market leaders in full tiling solutions – are returning to the Surface Design Show at London’s Business Design Centre from 7-9 February to demonstrate its new technology and present informative RIBA-approved CPDs for fail-safe external tiling installations.

Introduced to the market this year, BAL’s new range of external tiling systems in conjunction with sister company Gutjahr, protects outdoor covering from the unpredictable British weather.
Without the correct tiling systems, tiled areas can be susceptible to cracking, efflorescence, staining or patchy tiles – all derived from water damage or fluctuations in temperature.

Water penetrating the lower levels of an external assembly can pose a serious risk to the structural integrity of any balcony, terrace or patio. Over time, permeation of water through tile joints or via the tile and breaching any waterproof membrane can eventually cause long term damage if no provision is made for water to drain away efficiently.

BAL’s patented system, including drainage matting, edge profiles, drain grates and guttering, has been specified throughout prestigious projects across Europe including G7 venue Schloss Elmau, Bratislava Castle and Amsterdam Library, is simple to install and provides rapid, immediate and high volume drainage. Water is drained down through the screed and rapidly expelled from the assembly, meaning no water staining, no freeze/thaw threat or efflorescence.

The new products represent a complete new range of solutions for the BAL portfolio and work as a system with current BAL preparation, adhesives, grouts and sealant products.

This means for the first time architects, designers and contractors are provided with a true ‘one-stop-shop’ for balcony, terrace and patio systems for tiles, pavers and slabs.

As well as innovation solutions, BAL provides total specification support from design to build with a range of services including free M40/M20 specification writing service, fast-track project enquiry and market-leading Technical Advisory Service, sample test service, national specification support team, RIBA-accredited CPDs, BIM objects in NBS National BIM Library and a leading product guarantee.

BAL’s new and improved Easypoxy AG epoxy adhesive and grout makes floor tiling easy in hygienic areas

View the whole press release

Recently updated with a new and improved formulation, BAL Easypoxy AG epoxy adhesive and grout for walls and floors is chemical-resistant and solvent free.

Now available in white, black and grey, the new formulation provides end users with an epoxy that is much easier to mix, apply and clean-off during installations.

The improved product has an excellent set time of only 12 hours, compared to 24 hours with the previous formulation.
What’s more, the new formulation has an extended pot life of 45 minutes, giving users more time to mix and apply.

Recommended for commercial and domestic installations including kitchens, industrial/chemical plants, showers, swimming pools and other hygienic critical environments, BAL Easypoxy AG is perfect for ceramics, porcelain and fully vitrified tiles, mosaics and glass or translucent tiles including glass mosaics.

Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing, said: “BAL leads the UK tiling market with our continued focus on innovative solutions and leading performance for our end users. This focus ensures we develop new products with our customer base at the heart of this process.

“This new formulation will provide immense benefits for fixers, contractors and specifiers alike, producing significant time and cost savings and ensuring tiling installations are durable and resistant to the challenges of hygiene critical locations.”

New AquaDrain® drainage system from BAL ensures safe and sound external tiling

View the whole press release

Rain, frost and heat – tiled coverings on exposed balconies and terraces endure the harshest of conditions. However the main enemy is water, which penetrates joints in floor coverings and migrates into the substrate. Water is often retained there for long periods unable to exit as quickly as it entered.

Whether using ceramic, porcelain, natural stone or concrete paviours, penetrating water, if not drained away fast enough, can lead to frost damage, efflorescence production, and damp stains in stone/concrete paviors or even weed growth in between coverings.

New from BAL – the market-leaders in full tiling solutions – the AquaDrain® capillary-breaking drainage mat systems ensures immediate and rapid drainage of surface water, which is expelled from the balconies and terraces via ProFin® edge profiles and guttering systems, and is part of the innovative Gutjahr system technology range of external tiling products. ,

AquaDrain® EK and AquaDrain® T+ are available in 16 mm and 8 mm thickness. Providing high volume drainage capacity to inhibit rising trapped moisture, thereby avoiding the problems of surface discolouration of moisture-sensitive coverings and materials. This also helps reduce the risk of efflorescence production.

AquaDrain® EK can be used in combination with a thick drainage mortar screed or a thin lightweight epoxy-bound screed for low heights, heavy trafficked areas, while the AquaDrain® T+ is used with a direct point fixing method for lightweight, light traffic areas such as terraces.

With a collective 80 years of commercial tiling experience, incorporation of the Gutjahr range within the BAL portfolio ensures a guaranteed, full-system solution for external installations from the UK market-leader.
