Seasons Greeting's!

This year Christmas promises to be a decadent affair with indulgent design bringing a touch of glamour once again. The make-believe inspires a variety of enchanted offerings from luxurious crystal lighting to opulent walls and floors. In this festive issue of Surface Spotlight our eyes are drawn to key surfaces and materials full of magic and joy, some of which will be presented at Surface Design Show 2016 in the Surface Spotlight Live display. Sally Angharad reports.

An Enchanted Experience – Speirs + Major Awarded for Immersive Lighting Design in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Transformation

Speirs + Major
Photography: James Newton

Lighting designers Speirs + Major won the 2015 AL Light & Architecture Design Award for Outstanding Achievement after their work on the transformation of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Appointed as part of the competition winning team led by James Corner Field Operations (JCFO) and MAKE, Speirs + Major developed the conceptual ideas for the exterior lighting. The centerpiece is a unique catenary system developed for the Promenade where ethereal moon-like spheres suspended over the pathway create a dapple light. The effect is reminiscent of light filtering through a forest canopy and now that the nights are drawing in we have even more opportunity to experience this magical glow.

Time to Celebrate – Award Winning Sparkle Handknotted Rug by Ayka Design is Inspired by Festivities with Loved Ones

Ayka Design

A’ Design Award 2015 winner, the Sparkle handknotted rug is from the collection Celebration by Ayka Design, founded by K.Michelle Evans. Inspired by my memories of celebrating life with loved ones the design echoes the jewellery worn at parties in its abstract form as the light catches the sparkle on the bracelet. Combining art, beauty and comfort, handspun silk is used to create various thicknesses of yarns, dyed into a vibrant palette of rich blues, purples and gold. Mixing dark and light tones a three-dimensional effect is achieved on the final woven surface, evoking the reflective and enchanting qualities of elegant crystals.
