What are you looking forward to most about being part of the judging panel for the Surface Design Awards?''

With many years' experience in the commercial interiors industry I feel I can offer a unique perspective on judging the entries with an open mind on how these products can be used and implemented. I am looking forward to seeing a variety of different products/solutions that can be specified by architects and designers to assist them in designing great spaces that connect to the users on a personal level. Materiality is one of many important elements that converge to create truly amazing experiences and being able to be a part of the judging panel, sharing different opinions with the other judges to validate an award is a honour and very exciting.'''''

'

What are you personally looking for in terms of entries?''

For me, there is always an interest and support for New Young Talent entering the environment bringing with them a fresh perspective on materiality with an open mind to creating new solutions, therefore I am looking for new ways of thinking and considered, thoughtful solutions.'''

'

What advice would you give to those looking to submit a successful award?''

Originality. To often solutions are presented that are either non conducive to solving the problem or too similar to existing solutions therefore upon entering the awards the entrants should feel confident and proud of the work and time committed to creating an original solution that is considered and thoughtful in the response to the problem they are trying to solve.'''

'

Why are these awards so important to architects and designers?''

As an architect or designer our fundamental drive is to solve problems. After a category has been judged by a variety of different perspectives and experiences the entry and successful award is a celebration of the hard work and dedication by an individual or team who have created wonderful solutions to an ongoing desire to grow and develop. Therefore, being acknowledged and celebrated by peers is a great accolade and in turn informs other architects and designers about a solution within the industry.'

'

What are some emerging trends in materials and surfaces you've noticed?''

Materials that are multi-faceted in their capability that have unique qualities and uses. Materials are emerging that allow architects and designers to think differently about the application or allow for more experimental three-dimensional solutions. Materials that become inherent to the overall design solution is fantastic to see.'

'

Sustainability is a talking point in every project, what is your experience of successfully delivering sustainable solutions in what you do?''

Zebra are a Global Design and Architecture Consultancy who endeavour to put sustainability at the forefront of our project solutions. We have a globally connected internal team that work every day to share information and best practices of sustainable solutions for the benefit of our clients and clients guests/customers. Materiality is one of many parts of the solution therefore having sustainability champions in each of our offices allows us to be proactive and well versed in suitable solutions for a huge variety of projects. Neom in St James Quarter Edinburgh is one such example whereby Zebra in partnership with our contracting team won the BIID Anna Whitehead Prize for sustainability in 2023.''''
